These 10 steps are your guide to best spray results. The brief action list will help you avoid delay and get you straight off to a good start.
- Check the paint manufacturer’s job description. This will identify which tip (nozzle) you should use and the right power setting for the spray. This will ensure you get smooth, flawless coating and will also prevent a lot of unnecessary paint consumption and spray gun spatter.
- Use the right spray gun for the job: heavy industrial paint will not go down well in a spray gun designed for consumers.
- Read the manual. It contains lots of useful tips, possible solutions and instructions on how to begin. It also includes cleaning instructions for reusing the device.
- If a wall is freshly plastered, we recommend that you go over it first with a coat of primer. All paint sprayers can handle primers, provided you apply the appropriate settings and possibly a filter/nozzle.
- When you run your fingers over a wall that you are about to paint, do you still get flakes? Make sure you remove the plaster or similar substance before spraying.
- Mask everything well. When you use a spray gun you have to deal with overspray, like the spatters you get with a roller. Mask off parts adjacent to the spray surface at least 25cm wide and if necessary, cover the floor and windows. Spray painting is very fast. You’ll spend more time preparing/masking than actually spraying. Make sure you do it properly.
- Ready to start? First test the spray pattern on a piece of cardboard, paper, plywood, etc. Is the flow rate too much? Adjust the spray gun before you start spraying the wall.
- Make sure you keep the nozzle 15-20 cm away from the wall and hold the spray gun as upright as possible. Start making passes up and down from the floor (if masked off), spraying in uniform flowing movements. At the top of each pass, go down in the next (overlapping) pass. Release the trigger at the top of each pass and start moving the gun before you start spraying again. This will prevent paint building up at the top or bottom of the pass.
- Are you getting nice even passes with no thickening on the edges? Excellent! Let the wall dry and the result will be very nice.
- Are you done? Clean the machine carefully, so that next time you will get the best out of the machine again. Please consult the manual for cleaning instructions
